The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) on Wednesday, August 18 released their official Memorandum for the extension of voter registration hours after Spokesperson James Jimenez announced this matter in a press briefing.
According to the Comelec Memorandum, the new registration schedule will begin on August 23. From Mondays to Fridays, the new registration hours will be 8:00 am to 7:00 pm, while on Saturdays and holidays it is 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
“In cities and municipalities affected by the current/extended declaration of ECQ and MECQ, the new registration schedule abovementioned shall be effective right after the lifting/downgrading of the said quarantine category or restriction into GCQ, MGCQ, and any lower quarantine status.” as stated in the Memorandum.
Spokesperson Jimenez said that the Comelec en banc decided not to extend the voter registration beyond the September 30 deadline because “after that there are several activities that are already ‘very critical’ to the success of 2022 elections”
“Basically, the overview reiterated what the en banc already knew was that this will have an effect on all of these other activities. you delay one, and you basically delay everything else,” he added.
In relation to the, no extension of voter registration deadline, Prov’l Comelec Spokesperson Jomel Ordas said that they do not know how many Palaweños have not yet registered at their offices because they have no record of unregistered people aged 15-17 years old.
However, of the more than 76K voters deactivated in 2019, only 9K of them were reactivated.
According to the latest data from the Provincial Comelec, 100,281 people have registered in Palawan, including the City of Puerto Princesa. 49, 726 of them are males and 50, 555 are females.
