Interior Undersecretary for barangay affairs Martin Diño called on unvaccinated barangay chiefs to resign from their posts.
“You guys should be ashamed. Imagine, you are implementing rules when you yourselves aren’t vaccinated?” Diño said during a radio interview aired over dzBB on Sunday, January 16.
Diño, a former barangay captain himself, said the barangay chiefs nationwide should be the first to follow measures implemented by the national government.
The Department of Health (DOH) on Sunday, January 16, reported over 37,000 fresh cases of the coronavirus disease, pushing the country’s total active cases at close to 300,000 as of press time.
With this, the government is now inclined to strictly roll out more vaccinations in line. Recent measures, like keeping the unvaccinated individuals at home were recommended by the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) last week.
However, Liga ng mga Barangay sa Palawan President Board Member Ferdinand “Inan” Zaballa, in a recently published report made a statement that although the national government is more inclined on addressing the surging cases of the said pandemic, their office will remain on re-implementing Information and Education Campaigns (IECs) as well as house-to-house visits for their unvaccinated residents.
“Balik na naman sa square one, sabi ko nga sa mga kapitan. Ayaw din naman natin na mauwi pa sa arestuhan para doon sa mga lalabas na unvaccinated. Mas mainam na pairalin ang ibang paraan kesa unahin ang dahas,” Zaballa said.
In an update today, Zaballa said that the pronouncements made by the DILG are now subjected to deliberation in their office. Furthermore, he expects that all 367 Palawan punong barangays are already vaccinated.
“Kinukuha ko na ‘yung report kung mayroon pa bang kapitan na hindi bakunado dito sa Palawan. Of course may bearing ‘yung statement ni Sec. Diño, papaano mapapatupad ang batas kung ang kapitan mismo hindi bakunado?”
