What began as a typical afternoon of drinking among neighbors in Barangay Luzviminda ended in violence Friday, when a local farmer allegedly killed his drinking companion in a sudden fit of rage.
The victim, identified by police as 38-year-old Sonny Boy Reño, died after sustaining multiple hack wounds reportedly inflicted by Andy Bartolay, 42, a fellow resident of the same barangay. The incident unfolded in front of at least two other companions, shaking the small, tight-knit community on the rural outskirts of Puerto Princesa.
Authorities say the altercation started around 3 p.m., while the group was sharing alcohol near a local residence. According to initial police reports and statements from the village chief, Lady Gemang, a heated argument escalated when Reño allegedly threw a glass bottle at Bartolay. The latter reportedly evaded the projectile, grabbed a bolo nearby, and struck Reño repeatedly before fleeing the scene.
Bartolay claimed he “blacked out” after being struck and reacted instinctively out of anger. He admitted to disposing of the weapon in a nearby river before returning home, where he waited for police to arrest him.
The Puerto Princesa City Police Station 3 has confirmed that Bartolay is now in custody and is facing charges of murder. The case is expected to proceed to inquest in the coming days.
Police say further investigation is ongoing, including the collection of witness testimonies and forensic evidence. Meanwhile, the suspect remains detained, expressing remorse but standing by his claim of self-defense.
