With rampant cases of fire arising these days, how can you be sure of being safe from fire and avoid adding on the list of victims? It is seriously heartbreaking having to see one’s house, loved ones and properties be lost in front of them.

According to Health and Safety Executive, there are 3 things that may ignite fire. First is heat which may come from electrical appliances, smoker’s stuff or things that trigger sparks. Second is fuel which includes wood, plastic, rubber or foam, loose packaging materials, waste and paper. Third is oxygen, which also includes the air around us.

So here are some tips to prevent fire and few precautions amidst fire

Fire protection

-If possible, install smoke alarms at home, especially in some closed spaces since smoke can be your earliest warning of fire.

Plan your escape

-In case of fire, the first thing to do is to get out fast. Be sure that everyone knows at least two passable exits including windows in every room. As possible, have your household practice escape plan at least twice a year.

Safety in the kitchen

-When you cook, monitor it closely. Make sure that cooking areas are clear of combustibles. Wear short- sleeve clothes when you cook.

Monitor the use of electricity

-Once an electric appliance smokes or has an unusual smell, unplug it immediately, then have it checked before reusing. Plug only one electrical cord into each receptacle.

Crawl and roll

-If you encounter smoke while you’re escaping from a fire, use an alternative escape route. If there’s a need to crawl, do it on your hands and knees, keeping your head 30 to 60 centimeters above the floor. In case your clothes catch fire, don’t run. Stop where you are, drop to the ground, cover your face with your hands, and roll over and over to smother the flames. Cool the burn with water and call for help.
