Brooke’s Point Scientist, to make history by reaching 3rd deepest spot on Earth

The Brooke’s Point born microbial oceanographer Dr. Deo Florence L. Onda of The Marine Science Institute (MSI) of the University of the Philippines, is set to create history by reaching the third deepest spot on Earth, the Emden Deep in the Philippine Trench this coming March 22 to 28, 2021. The said Emdem Deep is approximately 10,400 m or 34,100 feet deep.

Onda is now onboard the DSSV Pressure Drop and will start the voyage from the port of Guam going to the Philippine Trench, he will be joined by Mr. Victor Vescovo, the current holder of the deepest manned descent in the Marianas trench in 2019. Vescovo is the main sponsor of Caladan Oceanic, a private organization that invited Onda in setting a new record.

Onda will be one of the first humans and the first Filipino to reach the 3rd deepest spot on Earth. In a statement published by UP MSI, the said deep sea expedition is equivalent to the first early flights into outer space, and it will be a historic achievement to date.
