Eight (8) indigent clusters from nine indigenous group in Palawan gathered at the Ramon V. Mitra Sports Complex for the Indigenous Peoples Games 2023.

The event, which kicked off on Saturday, November 18 until yesterday, November 19, aims to celebrate and preserve the traditional games of the region, including Pana, Sibat, and Takbo.

The event started with a parade and a cultural presentation attended by Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Richard E. Bachmann and PSC Commissioners.

Commissioner Matthew P. Gaston highlighted the significance of preserving the culture and rights of indigenous peoples, stating, “We aim not only to play but to revive and celebrate our culture.”

Provincial Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representative (IPMR) Arnel P. Abrina stressed the importance of preserving each tribe’s culture, saying, “Through this event, we slowly introduce, fully recognize, promote, and develop our culture and the rights of our people.”

The Provincial Sports Division Officer-in-Charge, Silvany Delight Q. Gastanes, highlighted the event’s goal to showcase the rich culture and unique talents of Palawan’s indigenous communities.

Governor V. Dennis M. Socrates, represented by Provincial Legal Officer Atty. Joshua U. Bolusa, conveyed his admiration for the indigenous communities as the “repositories of our culture and arts tradition.”

An awarding ceremony for outstanding groups and individuals is scheduled today.

The initiative was organized by the PSC in collaboration with the Provincial Sports Division, Provincial IPMR Office, and Puerto Princesa City Government.
