A new surf haven is set to unfold in Brgy. Alimanguan in the town of San Vicente, as they host the first SanVic Surf Competition this coming February 20 to 23 that will launch the SanVic Surf Festival, organized by the Barangay council, municipal government and the private sector, which consists mostly of resort and hotel owners in the area.
Organizer Siz Caballes said its time to introduce how amazing the waves of Alimanguan are, that if weather permits could reach 8 feet high. The local surfing community started in 2018 as a hobby for some, and later on evolved on doing surfing lessons for a fee with occasional visiting surfers.
The competition has four categories, Men’s Open (shortboard), Men’s Open (Longboard), Women’s Open Division (Longboard) and the Junior Shortboard for kids ages 15 years old below. Locals and foreigners can join, but they have to bring their own surfboard. A registration fee of P100 for kids, and P300 for adults will be collected in order to qualify as participants, and an online form needs to be accomplished at the SanVic Surf Page on Facebook.
The winner will get P5,000 cash plus e-bike, second place will get P3,000 cash, P2,000 for third and P1,000 for the fourth slot.
Caballes said that the competition proper will depend on the situation of the waves, it could happen right on the first day or 2nd or the third day of the festival, but they line up several activities to keep the surfers busy, and a coastal clean-up will happen on the first and last day of the festival.
“Naka-depende po talaga kung okay yung waves kaya mahaba yung mga araw ng competition, dun pa lang malalaman kung anung araw talaga sya.” Caballes said.
Selected judges and guests are expected to arrive to witness the competition. An unnamed official from Philippine Sports Commission is set to be this year’s honorary guest. This is the third spot in Palawan that launch surfing competition, one is in Nagtabon beach in Puerto Princesa City, and in Duli Beach in El Nido.
