The City Council expects that incoming Indigenous People’s Mandatory Representative (IPMR) can finally assume the post as an ex-officio member by the first week of July at the latest, said City Councilor Nesario Awat on Tuesday.
Councilor Awat told Palawan Daily News (PDN) that based on his recent communication with Regional Director Roberto Almonte of National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP), the “certificate of acceptance” for incoming IPMR Mark John Salunday is expected to be issued by around last week of June or first week of July.
He said Atty. Philip Jerome Hilario, the Secretary to the City Council, earlier wrote a letter to NCIP Regional Director Almonte regarding the issuance of Salunday’s acceptance certificate.
He further stated that Almonte sent a response and promised to immediately act upon the request.
Awat said while Almonte also verbally vowed to Atty. Hilario that they will release this certificate of acceptance by last week of May, it was not met.
“Si [Kagawad] Elgin [Damasco] tumawag din at ang pangako naman niya hanggang June 7. Ako tumawag din kasi kakilala ko naman si Director Almonte, pero ang tingin ko, sa [‘pagta]tanong-tanong ko sa kaniya, malabo hanggang June 7, baka hanggang katapusan ng June or first week ng July,” said Awat.
Incoming IPMR Salunday is preceded by Nestor Saavedra who formally gave his farewell speech on May 11 after serving three years as tribal representative to the city council.
