A district-wide literacy initiative in Bataraza is opening opportunities for wider community participation as Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation (RTNMC) backs efforts to help address reading gaps among grade school learners.

Called “Batang Bataraza Bumabasa,” the program is being developed as a hybrid reinforcement mechanism for literacy initiatives across the municipality, with the goal of strengthening support for learners who need help in developing their reading skills.

RTNMC said the initiative also seeks to create opportunities for long-term partnerships in community development involving the private sector and other stakeholders in Bataraza and the province of Palawan.

Rather than limiting the effort to a single form of assistance, the proposed partnership covers several areas that can support the program’s implementation and development.

These include data facilities; the distribution and curation of reading materials; training and development; stakeholder linkages; awards and recognition; monitoring and evaluation; and information, research and development.

The range of components reflects an effort to build support around literacy from different directions, from the availability of learning resources to the development of people and systems that can sustain the initiative.

For RTNMC, the program is also part of its continuing participation in educational and community development.

The company said its contribution to education includes its tax remittances, through which the School Education Fund (SEF) is integrated, as well as its participation in the Social Development and Management Program (SDMP) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

RTNMC also said these efforts are now being pursued under the expanded concept of “SDMP+,” which it is putting forward as another avenue for supporting development initiatives.

Through the literacy program, the company is opening the possibility of bringing more partners into the effort, particularly those that can contribute resources, expertise or other forms of support to the program’s identified components.

The proposed collaboration places particular attention on reading materials, training, data, monitoring and research, areas that can help provide continuing support to the literacy initiative.

At its core, Batang Bataraza Bumabasa is intended to respond to literacy gaps among grade school pupils in the municipality.

The initiative also provides a platform for DepEd, the private sector and other stakeholders to work toward a common education concern while creating opportunities for longer-term community partnerships.

With RTNMC opening its support to potential partners, the initiative is also looking beyond a single institution’s participation, seeking a broader community response to the municipality’s literacy needs.

The success of the undertaking will ultimately depend on how these partnerships are developed and sustained, and how the different components are put into practice in support of Bataraza’s young learners.
