The tragic aftermath of the MV June Aster disaster intensified on Thursday morning as harrowing survivor accounts emerged, detailing how a sudden explosion plunged the vessel into immediate darkness and trapped passengers below deck.
According to accounts from survivors on the ground, the disaster unfolded with terrifying speed when a loud blast struck the ship without warning, instantly cutting power and engulfing the quarters in pitch blackness. Survivors recounted that those staying in the air-conditioned accommodations were located in the lower levels, where the rapid thick smoke and sudden blackout made escape exceptionally difficult before flames consumed the superstructure.
Photographs captured from the scene show the heavily scorched, smoking hull of the passenger vessel charred along its waterline as it rests near the coastal waters of Coron, Palawan. Public anxiety has surged as families await word on the unaccounted individuals.
Out of the 134 total individuals listed on the ship’s manifest, comprising 117 passengers and 17 crew members, authorities have confirmed 43 survivors rescued and five fatalities recovered.
This leaves 86 individuals still missing, prompting an aggressive, round-the-clock search and rescue (SAR) operation by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), the Coron Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), and local response teams scouring the vicinity waters.
