In an island municipality where access to healthcare often depends on weather, distance, and the availability of transport, hundreds of residents received medical services that are rarely within easy reach after the Provincial Government of Palawan brought its YAKAP Program to Cagayancillo from July 24 to 26.
The three-day outreach underscored one of the province’s continuing public health challenges: delivering basic healthcare to communities separated from the mainland by hours of sea travel.
Led by the Provincial Health Office (PHO) in partnership with the Office of the Governor, the Hospital Development Management Program (HDMP), and several provincial government offices, the initiative sought to bring comprehensive medical services directly to residents rather than requiring patients to travel long distances for treatment.
According to the Provincial Health Office, more than 500 residents received free medical consultations during the mission, while 124 patients underwent dental consultations.
For residents with mobility limitations, the provincial government also distributed six wheelchairs, providing assistive devices that are often difficult to obtain in geographically isolated communities.
Beyond consultations, healthcare workers dispensed free medicines to patients requiring treatment and conducted malaria screening through blood smear examinations and Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs) as part of the province’s continuing malaria prevention and control efforts.
Medical teams also carried out Kutis Kilatis, a skin disease screening initiative designed to identify dermatological conditions early and connect affected residents with appropriate care.
The outreach forms part of the Provincial Government’s YAKAP Program, short for Yugto ng Alaga, Kalinga at Aruga ng Pamahalaan, one of the flagship healthcare initiatives under Governor Amy Roa Alvarez’s PALAWAN + PLUS Development Agenda.
The program aims to reduce disparities in healthcare access by bringing government medical services to remote islands and underserved communities, where routine consultations, diagnostic screening, and essential medicines remain less accessible than in urban centers.
