The most coveted and grand pageant in Puerto Princesa was stormed with issues regarding their new policy in choosing this year’s candidate, requiring the potential beauty queen that has not won a crown or even a runner-up title in any local pageant, to be an official candidate of Miss Puerto Princesa 2020.
The said issue reached the Sangguniang Panglungsod Secretary and has send an official letter to the secretariat of the upcoming Balayong Festival, to appeal and change the requirement to give considerations to others who want to join this year.
In the new guidelines it says “The official candidate must not be a major titleholder or runners-up of Miss Puerto Princesa, Miss Silka Palawan, Mutya ng Palawan, Miss Subaraw and Miss Palawan.”
Balayong Secretariat Dreu Manlawe in a phone interview insists that they are not withdrawing any rights to all the female contenders this year, but they just want to make it clear that joining Miss Puerto Princesa is not all about the rights, but a privilege, and they are standing on in their guidelines.
“It’s a right, if you are qualified, joining Miss Puerto is a privilege,” Manlawe said.
Manlawe added that so far, this time they have the biggest numbers of candidates compared in the past.
All in all, they have officially confirmed 29 candidates that will be soon introduced to the public. The candidates themselves express their wish not to compete with some veterans of beauty contests in the City and if the guidelines will change, they will not push through in joining.
The 29 candidates are all endorsed by different barangays and schools in the City, and the full lineup of activities will be officially announced during its Media conference this coming February 3.
Among the changes they are doing this year for Miss Puerto Princesa are the pictorial and video shoot of each candidates in their respective barangay and will feature local livelihood in the area.
Fashion Designer John Cliff is the official designer for this year’s coronation, set on March 3 at the City Coliseum, under the direction of pageant director Favs Gabo.
Miss Puerto Princesa 2020 will mark the 148th Founding anniversary of the City and the 16th Balayong Festival.
