The City Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) on Tuesday has appealed to the Puerto Princesans to obey the “Anti Burning Law” in order to avoid more grass fires in the city.

This is after the fire bureau recorded 22 grass fires in Puerto Princesa as of afternoon of April 21, Tuesday.

Fire Officer 3 Mark Anthony Llacuna, City BFP information officer, told Palawan Daily News (PDN) these grass fires occurred in five of the city barangays.

Sinisindihan talaga,” said Llacuna.

Llacuna said grass fires are actually due to open fire burning of some citizens on their backyards and fields.

In paragraph three under section 48 of the Ecological Solid Management Act (Republic Act 9003), open burning of solid waste materials is prohibited.

A violator may be penalized with one to 15 days of imprisonment and a corresponding monetary penalty of P300 to P1,000.

Llacuna further advised those who live near the fields to cut the weeds surrounding their houses to somehow create a “fire break” that will prevent flames from getting near their properties if grass fire occurs.
