The Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD) has partnered with the local government of Roxas, Palawan and opened a radio station in Roxas town in a bid to intensify its environmental education to the public.

The community radio station known as DWSD (Sustainable Development) 103.5 is intended solely for environmental and developmental affairs, said PCSD.

The soft launching of the radio station took place last December 19.

PCSDS Deputy Director Atty. Adelina B. Villena explained that the purpose of the radio station is to educate communities on practices that are consistent with protection, conservation and sustainable development and encourage them to abandon activities that caused destruction and degradation to the environment.

“Ito ay community radio station kaya’t mahalaga na panatilihin ang involvement ng community… Sana ay maging tulay ang radio station na ito para sa mga bago at kapaki-pakinabang na kaalaman na makarating sa mga komunidad,” Atty. Villena said in a statement.

She declared that the municipality of Roxas is now a model municipality in running a community radio station that promoted environmental protection, conservation and sustainable development.

“Kung ang lahat ng LGUs ay tutulad sa pagkakaroon nito, mas mapapadali ang pagturo at pagpaalam ng mga probisyon ng ating mga batas pangkalikasan,” Atty. Villena further said.

The Republic Act 7611 the Strategic Environmental Plan (SEP) for Palawan Act, enacted in 1992, provided for the adoption of a comprehensive framework for the sustainable development of Palawan, compatible with protecting and enhancing the natural resources and endangered environment of the province. It created the PCSD to be responsible for the governance and implementation of and provision of policy direction to the SEP.

PCSD said that the Republic Act No. 8993 granted them “a franchise to construct, install establish, operate and maintain radio and/or television broadcasting stations in the province of Palawan.”

Roxas Mayor Dennis M. Sabando for his part said that the opening of radio station in their town, solely for environmental education purposes will elevate the level of awareness among his constituents, and also those from the nearby towns.
