Every second week of October, the Philippines observes National Mental Health Week based on Proclamation No. 452, dated August 25, 1994, signed by then-President Fidel V. Ramos. This day is dedicated to increasing global education and understanding of the significance of mental health to people all over the world, despite the fact that it is frequently disregarded and stigmatized. Because of misconceptions surrounding mental health issues, people often suffer in silence and don’t seek treatment for their conditions. Mental health awareness is an important initiative to improve understanding of mental health conditions and increase access to healthcare for those in need.
As President Bongbong Marcos concurred in his speech, “mental health should be a global priority”. He made this remark as the Philippines joins the world in celebration of World Mental Health Day, which aims to raise awareness of mental health issues and mobilize efforts in support of mental health. As a response, the Philippine Mental Health Association, Inc. is celebrating National Mental Health Month and, as a part of the celebration, they will be conducting activities that will highlight the global theme of 2022’s World Mental Health Day, set by the World Federation for Mental Health: “Make mental health and well-being for all a global priority.” Together with the TOW WEST, PMHA invites people and groups to unite and highlight the significance of this celebration as a step toward improved wellbeing.
On October 20, 2022, the PMHA Palawan Chapter held a one-day celebration. The celebration included an assembly at Balayong’s People Park followed by a motorcade around the city accompanied by the TOWWEST marching band, a Zumba dance competition, and the recognition and awarding of partner agencies. Induction and oath-taking of PMHA Palawan Chapter Board Management 2023–2024 took place at SM City Puerto Princesa.
Lastly, this event provides a timely reminder that mental health is essential and that those living with mental health issues are deserving of care, understanding, compassion, and pathways to hope, healing, recovery, and fulfillment.
