The City Government of Puerto Princesa has urged the public and barangay officials to de-clog their waterways to maximize the functions of existing drainage canals, that will help prevent or minimize flooding during heavy downpour of rain.

In a statement, the Office of the City Mayor, through Mayor Lucilo R. Bayron has reminded the public to maintain cleanliness in their respective localities and initiate declogging operations. He also said that some offices of the city government such as City Engineering Department and Oplan Linis Program and City Solid Waste Management Program, both programs under the Office of the Mayor, have their regular maintenance activities.

“Muli ring pinapaalalahan ang publiko at mga barangay officials na sana’y panatilihing malinis at paigtingin ang declogging operations sa kanilang mga waterways, para ma-maximize ang function ng mga existing na canals or drainage systems. Ang CGPP, through the Office of the City Engineer, Oplan Linis, or Solid Waste Management, ay patuloy lang rin naman ang pagsasagawa ng regular maintenance efforts tungkol dito,” the City Mayor’s Office said in a statement.

Waterways and creeks should be unclogged to prevent flooding, protect ecosystems, and ensure proper water flow for various uses. Clogged waterways, often due to trash and debris, can lead to increased flood risks, damage to property and infrastructure.

On Saturday, July 5, 2025, the Barangay Local Government Unit of San Miguel through the initiative of Punong Barangay Prince Russel Gloriani de-clogged drainage canals in Bougainvillea Street Purok Masaya. Gloriani explained that this in preparation of the rainy days. He mentioned two purok presidents namely Bogs Cayao and Nestor Closa, who helped him execute the said activities together with volunteers in their barangay.

Last month, Gloriani said that they hold a synchronized community clean up drive which involves mainly the declogging of drainage canals in their barangay. He said that among those who participated the cleanup activity were barangay residents, barangay workers, youth, senior citizens, solo parents, PWD, 4Ps, Commando Brotherhood, Lady Commandoes, homeowners association (HOA), business sector, volunteer organizations, purok officials, IPs, BFARMC, and religious sector.

To unclog drainage canals, a multi-pronged approach is needed, combining immediate removal of debris to avoid future obstructions.
Leaves, and trash from households shall be removed before flushing the canal with high-pressure wager to remove silt and smaller debris. Finally, regular maintenance activities is key to prevent future build-up such as clearing debris regularly and educating the community on proper waste disposal.
