Numerous towns in Palawan also honor and celebrate the feast of Señor Sto. Niño, the well-loved image of Jesus Christ as a child that has a devotional origin from the Visayas region. The southern town of Sofronio Española is one of the places in Palawan that celebrates the feast which can be traced back to the 70s.
This year, the Sto. Nino Parish Catholic Church, along with the local government of Española through the leadership of Mayor Marsito Acoy, is once again in full force for the annual fiesta of the town. The festivities started last January 14 with a nightly presentation in the plaza.
Española Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Officer Ernesto Nagato said that the fiesta will have its highlight events this coming January 18 and 19, Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
The major activity on Saturday is the traditional procession of different images of Sto. Niño, while the last day of the celebration is a big day for the street dancing participated by different barangays in Española.
Nagato said there are three contingents for the Hala Bira and Viva Sto. Niño Ati-Atihan dancing in the street this coming Sunday that will start at 9 in the morning.
The fiesta theme for this year is “Santo Niño, Huwaran Ng Wagas Na Kapakumbabaan Sa Pagiging Tapat Na Lingkod.”
Bgy. Barotuan in El Nido is another place in Palawan that also observes the Sto. Niño Fiesta.
