The Society of Petroleum Engineers-Palawan State University chapter (SPE-PSU) successfully held the first SPE Fest last October 18 and 19, 2019.
SPE Fest is a two-day event composed of activities designed to test the skills of Petroleum Engineering students.
“PetroFest is an activity na handog ng Society of Petroleum Engineers para magbigay ng chance sa mga students na i-challenge sila, na ipakita ‘yung talent nila, and ‘yung knowledge nila, para maging mas matibay pa ‘yung pundasyon nila sa sarili nila regarding petroleum engineering,” SPE-PSU Junior Officer for External Affairs June Tuballa said.
Some of the activities were quiz bee competitions such as PetroSmart and PetroWitty, that tested the students’ knowledge in petroleum engineering.
“I believe that the Petroleum Engineering students should be the jack of all trades, and that’s why we have PetroWitty at this year’s SPE Festival. PetroWitty is all about the courses on the BSPE (BS Petroleum Engineering”) Curriculum that is provided in this institution,” SPE-PSU Vice President for External Affairs Kristiana Fiel said.
There was also a contest for oil rig design, where six teams built a mock-up of their own oil rigs, which they then defended before the judges, who were professors of the BS Petroleum Engineering program.
SPE Fest 2019 was capped off with a night at Aziza Paradise Hotel for SPE Convergence 2019 with the theme “Go Lokal!”. Some of the resource speakers included BSPE alumnus Engr. Harthwell Capistrano who talked about the importance of safety in the petroleum industry, as well as a Career Talk from Engr. Jerico Padrones, where he discussed possible careers with a BSPE diploma.
