Conquering the battle of the brains in Statistics, three Palawan State University Main Campus students topped the 25th Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) Provincial Eliminations held in the PSA Training Room, PSA Building, Bgy. San Miguel, Puerto Princesa City, October 29, Tuesday.

Out of the 14 quizzers who participated in the contest, PSU BS in Petroleum Engineering (BSPE) freshmen student Cloydian T. Demandante emerged as the contest champion followed by the Kristoff M. Macario and Jomarie M. Angeles for 2nd and 3rd places, respectively.

Designed to test the knowledge of first year students in Statistics, the PSQ is conducted annually all over the country as part of the celebration of the 30th National Statistics Month with the theme “Data Innovation: Key to a Better Nation”.

Cloydian T. Demandante, the contest champion, shared the importance of statistics to students in real life circumstances like computing for their General Weighted Average using the statistical tool “mean” or “average”.

“Kasi statistics can help us know different things in life that we can apply in a real life situation and how to improve things certain aspect. In what I mean, apply and improve, look at this simple situation, how can you know if you’re doing okay in school if you don’t know statistics? In just knowing your grade in every subject and calculating your GWA with your midterms grade and knowing if you must push yourself harder in your finals or what you are doing is just okay so that you will not fail a semester,” Demandante told Palawan Daily News in an exclusive interview.

In connection with the theme of the National Statistics Month, “Data Innovation: Key to a Better Nation,” Demandante cited the importance of statistics in guiding companies and even countries in development.

“For bigger scale, it is used by companies, industries and even countries to know what happens now and what will happen in the future so they can act for the betterment of their own goal. In short, if there is no statistics, society will crumble.” Demandante added.

Three colleges and universities from Puerto Princesa City sent their participants to the PSQ Provincial Eliminations: Palawan State University Main Campus, Holy Trinity University and Fullbright Colleges.

The top three students will represent the province of Palawan in the upcoming 25th Philippine Statistics Quiz Regional Finals in PSA Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro on November 12, 2019. The winner of the regional finals will represent Region IV MIMAROPA in the 25th PSQ National Finals.
