The PCSDS District Management Division (DMD) South conducted a successful rescue operation, saving a critically endangered Palawan Pangolin (Manis culionensis), locally known as balintong, on February 27 in Rizal, Palawan.

Ms. Jonamarie C. Licpan from the District Management Division South and staff from the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) in Barangay Punta Baja collaborated to ensure the safe retrieval and proper care of the pangolin.

The rescue mission was initiated by Ms. Frelanie Catriz, a concerned citizen who found the pangolin by the roadside in Purok Salongsong, Barangay Iraan, on the evening of February 26, 2024. Despite having healed injuries, including a missing hind leg whose cause remains unknown, the animal required immediate assistance.

The Palawan Pangolin holds significant ecological importance as an endemic species to Palawan and is classified as “Critically Endangered” under PCSD Resolution No. 23-967 (unpublished), with additional protection provided by its listing under Appendix I of CITES. Protecting these creatures is essential for maintaining ecological balance and preserving biodiversity.

The PCSDS is continually urging ctizens who encounter live wildlife to leave them undisturbed in their natural habitat. However, if an animal is in distress or poses an immediate threat, individuals can contact the PCSDS Wildlife Enforcement Unit (WEU) at 0931-964-2128 (Smart) or the PCSDS Front Desk hotline at 0970-302-8554 (Smart) and Landline (048) 434-4235 / 434-4234. Additionally, assistance can be sought through PCSDS social media channels on Facebook (pcsd7611), Instagram (pcsd_ra7611), and Twitter (@pcsds7611).
