As the 2025 National and Local Elections approach, 60 Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) from the Puerto Princesa City Jail will have the opportunity to cast their votes on May 12. This marks a significant move toward ensuring that every eligible citizen, regardless of their current circumstances, exercises their right to vote.
The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) has confirmed that preparations are already underway to guarantee the safety and security of the voting process for the PDLs on election day. Jail officials are coordinating with the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) to ensure that voting runs smoothly within the confines of the jail.
In addition to the 60 PDLs from Puerto Princesa, about 200 PDLs from Brooke’s Point District Jail in Palawan will also be given the chance to vote.
Both the BJMP and the COMELEC are committed to upholding the regulations that will maintain a fair process while allowing PDLs to participate in the democratic process, despite their incarceration.
