A total of 130 cases of Rotavirus have been recorded in the province of Palawan from January to April 2025, according to data from the Center for Regional Epidemiology and Technology Enhancement (CREATE) MIMAROPA of the Department of Health (DOH).
Out of this number, 115 cases were from the city of Puerto Princesa, while one patient from the municipality of Sofronio Española was reported to have died.
Palawan is the only province in the MIMAROPA region that recorded cases of Rotavirus in the first four months of the year. Data from CREATE MIMAROPA also showed a 113 percent increase in cases compared to the same period in 2024, when only 61 cases were reported. Last year, the total number of cases in the province reached 324, with three deaths recorded.
According to Noel Orosco of CREATE MIMAROPA, Rotavirus is a highly contagious disease that commonly affects infants and children aged one to four years old. It often causes severe diarrhea and dehydration, which can lead to death if not treated promptly.
Orosco reminded parents to immediately bring children showing symptoms such as severe diarrhea, extreme fatigue, high fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, and irritability to the hospital for immediate treatment.
