Back-to-back earthquakes in Batanes kill at least 8 people

Two earthquakes struck Itbayat, Batanes in the wee hours Saturday morning, July 27, which resulted to eight deaths, injuring 60 others, local officials reported.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the first earthquake occurred at 4:16 a.m. when most people were asleep in their homes, and followed by another quake at 7:37 a.m.

Houses were damaged, including Itbayat Church, and casualties, including patients of the local hospital, were evacuated to the town plaza.

The provincial government has deployed volunteers to provide food supplies and medicines while the Philippine Air Force has transported its rescue teams and relief goods to the area.

Search and retrieval operation of casualties are still on going.
