Presidential candidate Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson on early Thursday resigned as chairperson and member of the Partido Reporma party a few hours before the president and other leaders of the political party took an oath of allegiance and endorsement for the bid of Vice President Leni Robredo.
Despite developments, Lacson announced that he will now campaign as an independent candidate brushing aside rumors that he plans to withdraw from the race.
Meanwhile, Partido Reporma President and former House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez during Partido Reporma’s endorsement said that currently, there are two frontrunners for the country’s highest executive seat naming Robredo and Marcos.
“We reasonably believe that the only realistic option at this point, with roughly a month and a half left, is to converge with Leni Robredo’s campaign. Together, we will pursue the realization of our collective aspirations to improve the chances of ordinary Filipinos at a better life,” Alvarez said.
Alavarez stressed the need to put aside personal preferences in order to achieve “collective victory for good governance, a better future for Filipinos, and a strong and progressive nation.”
“We need a leader. And for the 2022 Presidential elections, given all these considerations and the crisis we have to overcome, that leader is a woman. Her name is Leni Robredo,” he said.
He added that the party will ensure to work as one to gain the majority of votes in Mindanao citing Davao del Norte, where the bailiwick of President Rodrigo Duterte is located.
