The people of Palawan commemorated the 81st Palawan Liberation, showcasing the heritage tourism sites of Puerto Princesa and Palawan and holding various activities in line with the “81st Salute to Valor: Palawan Liberation.”

The liberation of Palawan in April 1945 was a significant event that freed the island province from the bondage of Japanese occupation during World War II.

Early this morning, April 22, 2026, a solemn wreath-laying ceremony was held at Mendoza Park, Puerto Princesa City. Palawan Governor Amy Roa Alvarez—together with Mr. Nico Mendoza Tan (representing Mayor Lucilo R. Bayron) and Col. Michael Delos Reyes (representing Commo. Charles Merric Villanueva of the Philippine Navy)—led the proceedings and shared inspiring messages with those in attendance. Officials noted that the ceremony serves as a way of remembering and honoring World War II heroes on this 81st anniversary.

Officials also announced that both the Province of Palawan and the City of Puerto Princesa are initiating a memorable walking tour. These activities are part of an effort to rediscover Puerto Princesa’s vibrant past and colorful culture. The tour includes destinations such as the Governor’s Residence, Eulalia Park, the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, and the historic Plaza Cuartel.

“As the sun set over Princess Eulalia Park, Sayaw sa Parke: Indak ng Kalayaan came to life—an evening of rhythm, grace, and remembrance in honor of our heroes,” the City Tourism Office of Puerto Princesa said.

Presented by the Province of Palawan through the performances of Sining Amyhan, and by the City Government of Puerto Princesa through the City Tourism Office (featuring Banwa Dance & Arts and the Puerto Princesa City Choir), the program beautifully captured the spirit of courage and sacrifice that defined Palawan’s liberation. Every movement and every note served as a living tribute to the province’s shared history and identity.

Mayor Lucilo R. Bayron also shared that renowned Filipino historian Dr. Michael Charleston “Xiao” Chua paid a courtesy call to his office today.

“Dr. Chua is widely known for his work in promoting Philippine history through various platforms, including television, lectures, and academic engagements. He currently serves as an Associate Professor at De La Salle University and is recognized for making history more accessible and engaging to the public,” the Mayor said.

The visit coincided with Dr. Chua’s scheduled lecture at Western Philippines University (WPU) for the 81st Salute to Valor: Palawan Liberation Symposium, where he is set to share insights on the role of Palawan in the Filipino fight for freedom.
