Nagsagawa ang Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff (PCSDS) ECAN Monitoring and Evaluation Division (EMED) ng isang “sustainability assessment” gamit ang Sustainable Management Tool (SMOT) sa mining site ng CBNC sa Barangay Rio Tuba, Bataraza, Palawan noong Agosto 29 – Setyembre 2.

Upang tiyakin ang patuloy na pagsunod ng Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC) sa mga alituntunin ng International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) at United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).

Ang SMOT ay isang tool na naglalayong masukat ang “sustainable development” ng isang kompanya sa aspeto ng ekonomiya, panlipunan, kalikasan, at pamamahala. Sa pamamagitan nito, natuklasan na “proaktibo” ang CBNC sa kanilang mga hakbang, at nagpapakita ito ng pagsunod sa mga regulasyon kaugnay ng pagmimina sa Palawan.

Nagmungkahi rin ang PCSDS ng iba’t ibang paraan para mapabuti pa ang mga “sustainable practices” ng CBNC, tulad ng pakikipagtulungan sa akademya at pagbibigay ng libreng edukasyon.

Noong Agosto 31, inaprubahan ng PCSD ang isang resolusyon na nagtatakda ng pangunahing kinakailangan ng “sustainability monitoring” gamit ang SMOT para sa mga kompanyang nagmimina sa lalawigan.
