The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) unveiled a groundbreaking initiative on November 8 with the introduction of the Adlao Azul, a solar-driven boat aimed at enhancing accessibility and delivering essential services to secluded island communities in Palawan.

Crafted by Oceantera Energy Corporation through a Php25-million ($452,000) grant under the USAID Energy Secure Philippines project, the Adlao Azul features cutting-edge U.S.-manufactured battery systems and high-efficiency bifacial solar panels, enabling a six-hour cruise on clean energy.

Serving the islands of Coron, Culion, and Busuanga, the vessel will facilitate the transport of crucial supplies such as food, vaccines, and medical essentials.

Additionally, it will be used in providing emergency aid during power outages and natural disasters.

“USAID has collaborated closely with national and local governments, as well as the private sector, to expand the use of renewable energy across various sectors, including transportation, agriculture, island electrification, and disaster response,” said Dr. Paul Brown, USAID Philippines Environmental Officer.

Former Climate Change Commission Assistant Secretary Joy Goco commended the project, saying, “These solar-powered boats are transformative technologies addressing climate change mitigation while supporting community livelihoods and economies. I hope to see this replicated in other islands.”

Post the Adlao Azul launch, USAID and Oceantera are committed to broadening the availability of clean energy-powered boats in Palawan.

This involves documenting supplier networks and regulations, establishing franchise agreements, and connecting potential funders with boat operators and builders.

USAID envisions pioneering renewable energy adoption, modernizing transportation, and streamlining logistical chains for efficient delivery of essential goods and services.

The project is under the Energy Secure Philippines, a $34 million, five-year USAID initiative, which focuses on mobilizing investments, deploying modern energy technology, and supporting policy reforms to create a competitive energy sector driving future economic growth and social development in the Philippines.
