Palawan News – Because of the strong implementation on health and safety and without lost time injury (LTI) in its operations last 2017, Berong Nickel Corporation, for the second time, received the prestigious Safety Excellence Award.
Conferred during the 4th Workplace Advocates on Safety in the Philippines Inc. Convention and General Assembly, the award was presented to BNC and its health and safety officials last June 8.
“We are greatly humbled for having been awarded by the prestigious WASPI for two consecutive years now. We sincerely do share in the belief that there are indeed companies that are compliant with OSH standards and of outstanding corporate responsibility,” said Engr. Marc Raymund L. Zamora.
This award is a solid proof of Berong Nickel Corporation’s steadfast implementation and execution of its safety and health policies and programs based on the Mines Safety and Health Standards and Occupational Safety and Health Standards (OSHS) and to the newly approved Occupational Safety and Health Bill—which mandates stricter compliance as stated in Senate Bill No. 1317 or the proposed “Act Strengthening Compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Standard”.
The “Safety Excellence Award” given to BNC was in line with the accumulated 8 million man-hours with ZERO incident record or No Lost Time Accidents covering the period of September 23, 2014 to March 31, 2018 of the company. Related to this Safety Excellence Award, WASPI also recognized the leadership of the two accredited Occupational Safety and Health Practitioners of the company for their strict implementation of the safety and health standards.
The BNC Safety and Health Superintendent Engr. Rolando L. Sajot and Engr. Ralph Adrian C. Fabian, Safety and Health Jr. supervisor, further credited that the company’s achievements are due to the endless support from the BNC’s top management especially from the BNC President Engr. Cesar F. Simbulan Jr. that results to an overwhelming support and shared effort from the site management and employees.
“These awards are the result of the shared effort of BNC management and employee who have been compliant with OSHS and DAO 2000-98 standards, also through boundless support and involvement of different departments to various safety program/activities implemented throughout the years,’’ said Engr. Fabian.
“It is my pleasure to recognize the excellent safety achievements of my beloved Berong Nickel Corporation and my very best effort as safety professional for two (2) consecutive years by the prestigious organization. Thank you WASPI family, your recognition is our pride and honor. We will ensure continual compliance to and promotion of safety throughout our mining operation. I am more than proud to be part of this achievement most especially being a safety professional and a miner, and it is my pride to work with BNC.”
The BNC Safety and Health Superintendent Engr. Sajot also acknowledged the overwhelming support of the people behind the achievement of the said awards and recognition. He highlighted that safety in the organization is a shared responsibility focused on changing values and behavior of the employees, contractors and stakeholders that was originated from the BNC top management.
“The top management overwhelming support, the full cooperation of the different department heads and the effort of all the personnel engaged in our operation is the vital key of these extraordinary accomplishments. Receiving the award and recognition for the second time is remarkable. Believing in the value of shared responsibility among all of our employee, contractors and stakeholders is the key element of effective implementation of our safety and health programs on our day to day operations resulted to a common values and culture that Safety of people is non-negotiable.”

Villafuerte recognized the company’s effort in the achievement of the zero-accident record in the workplace from January to December 2017 by giving the ‘Safety Excellence Award’. Also, I am flattered receiving the Certificate of Recognition for the achievement of this award in two consecutive years. Being an accredited safety professional, I consider this as an additional success in the field of my profession. Receiving this recognition challenges me to continuously improve and study all the possible risk associated in our operations, plan and establish additional preventive measures in all identified hazards to ensure that every working man and woman in Berong Nickel Corporation is safe and healthy for their family.”
