In a press conference yesterday, May 21, the National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea (NTF-WPS) revealed extensive environmental damages caused by Chinese fishermen in Bajo De Masinloc.
The event, led by Commodore Jay Tarriela and Assistant Director General Jonathan Malaya, showcased photos and videos documenting these destructive actions from December 2016 to 2022.
Tarriela stressed the importance of transparency, sharing these visuals to inform the public about the illegal activities carried out by Chinese fishermen, which were previously reported by the Philippine Coast Guard.
“This morning, I held a press conference alongside Assistant Director General Jonathan Malaya to publicize a collection of photos and videos that document the destructive actions of Chinese fishermen in Bajo De Masinloc from December 2016 to 2022. It is important to note that these incidents were previously reported to the national government by the Philippine Coast Guard,” said Tarriela.
“”In the spirit of transparency, the NTF-WPS Chair believes it is crucial to make these images public, so that the Filipino people can gain a comprehensive understanding of the illegal activities conducted by Chinese fishermen, even during the previous administration,” he added.
He further highlighted the ongoing violations.
“Despite the 2016 arbitral award acknowledging the detrimental impact of China’s destructive fishing practices on the marine environment, including severe damage to coral reefs and violations of obligations to preserve and protect fragile ecosystems and endangered species’ habitats, Chinese fishermen continue to engage in the substantial harvest of endangered sea turtles, coral, and giant clams in the West Philippine Sea.”
The NTF-WPS reiterated its commitment to protecting the West Philippine Sea’s fragile ecosystems and called for continued vigilance and enforcement against illegal fishing activities.
