With the goal of promoting work-life balance, Berong Nickel Corporation (BNC) is set to kick off a bigger and better 2020 edition of its annual Sports Festival this coming February adding its 1st watersports tournament on Kayaking.

The main objective of this event is to engage its employees in sports and fitness activities to encourage a healthy lifestyle, social interaction and general well-being at work. This is also a good venue to exhibit that BNC is the standard bearer of responsible mining showcasing our accomplishment on environmental protection.

Four teams were created from twelve different BNC departments are participating in this year’s competition, which shall now include more events like badminton, billiards, table tennis, darts, chess, dama, e-sports and our country’s favorite sport: basketball.

“Since BNC camp is adjacent to Llabongan River, which is the main downstream of the water tributaries up in the mountains where we operate. What better way to boast our testament to environmental compliance than to showcase a clear Llabongan River by lunching of our first ever water sports tourney through Kayak competition in this year’s Sports Festival,” said Resident Manager Engr. Marc Raymund L. Zamora. “With our 2020 Sportsfest kicking-off this February, we again would like to show the versatility and creative side of the company … by holding our first ever watersports competition,” he further reiterated.

In fact, and for some years now, we have upgraded our Riverside into a reception and dining area where we hold meetings, receive guests and conduct site visits. Moreover, our riverside is not only there for display, but rather with added provisions: of fish hand feeding and kayak rides for those adventurous who wanted to experience these. Finally, we also have Cesar’s Garden, bearing the namesake our President, Engr. Cesar F. Simbulan, JR., which is likewise located along BNC’s Riverside.

“I think it fits very well. Not only that we show that we co-exist with our protected river, the structures are already there just awaiting spectators for viewing. And with our upcoming sportfest in mind, showcasing our Riverside while reaching-out to more people at the same time, is definitely just as suitable it as could be. At the end of the day, a good word-of-mouth from everyone are much more sincere and much better appreciated,” Engr. Zamora explained.

Kayaking is a watersport that involves paddling using a double-bladed oar and a small boat known as a kayak. The boat sits low in the water and usually only accommodates a single paddler, but some boats can hold two to three people.

Kayaking is a versatile sport that can be done in practically any body of water and is easily paired with other activities, like camping or fishing among others. Rivers, lakes, oceans and even mangrove area are popular spots for kayaking and due to the different types, everyone from beginners to experts can enjoy the sport.

The beginner-friendliness and the epic challenges are a few of the reasons people kayak, but there are several others. Whether you’re looking to take in the sights in a distinctive way or you’re looking to get a low-impact workout, kayaking has something to offer everyone.

“We also understand that the typical Sportfest events are primarily indoor and board games. Of course we will be having the classic games that we all love: basketball, badminton, table tennis, darts, billiards, chess and dama. With the thought of inclusion of an outdoor event in our annual Sportsfest, and moreover performing it on water, really excites everyone. Of course all safety and environmental precautionary measures will be in place. No one will be injured, and there will be no lasting environmental effects. To this, we will further reinforce the company’s good record on compliance,” Engr. Zamora expressed.

“We expect fun times and happy experience for everyone, and hopefully this watersports event become a mainstay in our future sportsfests. What lies in the following years should be no less exciting nonetheless, but for now, we hope good things for our Sportsfest 2020. Good luck and enjoy everyone!” Engr. Zamora exclaimed.

This year saw its largest turnout yet, making way for plenty of company firsts that made the games much more exciting. Competition often shapes our best selves and allows us to show our full potential. Whether it’s professionally, personally or athletically; this will always ring true. As this year’s sportsfest draws near you can bet that it’s going to be a definite high point of BNC‘s successful year.
