Mayor Lucilo R. Bayron disclosed that the city government started to lay out its development plan for the proposed relocation site in Barangay Irawan intended for 1,753 informal settler families in Quito, and one of his plans is to establish an aquaculture project.

He said that in his recent visit to General Santos City, he was amazed by their aquaculture project which some 13,000 workers were hired for the project.

If a large/scale aquaculture project will be established near the relocation site, Mayor Bayron said, those who will relocate to Irawan from Quito will benefit since they will be prioritized for the hiring of workers in the aquaculture project.

“Napakaganda ng aquaculture at livelihood nila doon sa GenSan. Ang aquaculture nila itong technology galing sa Taiwan at ang gusto nila makapagtayo tayo ng isang aquaculture production,” he said.

An aquaculture project will provide job opportunities to a substantial number of his constituents, especially those who will relocate to Barangay Irawan. Other facilities such as the trading post, terminal, will also rise in Irawan.

“Wino-work out ko kung magkatuluyan tayo, sinabi ko sa kanila na ang e-hire nyo ay yung e-relocate doon para hindi na sila aalis sa area,” Mayor Bayron said.

He, however, did not give details yet about the company that will partner with the city to venture into this kind of project.

These 1,753 informal settlers erected their houses in the city’s coastal water of Barangay Liwanag, Bagong Silang, Pagkakaisa, and Mabuhay and they need to be relocated to pave the way for the construction of the cruise ship port and other development projects in the area.

They will be transferred to 45.5-hectare relocation in Macasaet-Maslog property in Irawan, acquired at a cost of P125 million by the city government last year.

Mayor Bayron said that he visited some socialized housing sites in the country because he wanted to come up with an appropriate design that will maximize and make good use of the limited space in the relocation site.

He said that a 32-square meter area for each family can still accommodate them comfortably if properly designed, especially if a loft will be added to the house design.
