Pag-asa Island, Kalayaan, Palawan – The idyllic shores of Pag-asa Island in the West Philippine Sea have become a battleground against an onslaught of foreign rubbish, originating from China, Taiwan and Vietnam, despite the relentless coastal clean-up efforts carried out by the Philippine Navy (PH Navy), Western Command (WESCOM) and Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). The persistent invasion of garbage poses a grave threat to the island’s fragile ecosystem and the tireless work of the cleanup crews.

In a heartbreaking scene, the pristine sandy beaches are now marred by a sea of plastic waste, styrofoam containers, and discarded fishing gear. This unrelenting influx of rubbish threatens not only the natural beauty of Pag-asa Island but also the livelihoods of the local fishing communities that depend on these waters for their sustenance.

The PH Navy, WESCOM, PCG and community volunteers have been at the forefront of the battle against marine pollution, conducting regular coastal clean-ups to rid the shores of the foreign debris. Dedicated teams of personnel tirelessly scour the coastline, collecting and disposing of the accumulated waste. Despite their unwavering commitment, the sheer volume of garbage reaching the island’s shores poses a formidable challenge to their efforts.

The presence of foreign waste not only damages the ecosystem but also poses health risks to marine life and humans alike. The contamination of fishing grounds disrupts the delicate balance of marine biodiversity, jeopardizing the already vulnerable livelihoods of the island’s fisher folk.

They emphasize the urgent need for sustainable waste management practices, increased public awareness, and the implementation of stringent measures to hold accountable those responsible for the pollution.

As the sun sets over the resilient shores of Pag-asa Island, the battle against foreign rubbish continues. The unwavering dedication of the PH Navy, PCG, and the local community serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the natural beauty and ecological balance of the West Philippine Sea.
