Gov. Dennis M. Socrates voiced his hopes for a thriving seaweed industry in Palawan, emphasizing its potential to improve local livelihoods during the 2024 Philippine Seaweed Congress, held from November 7-8 at the Citystate Asturias Hotel in Puerto Princesa.
Addressing around 400 participants, including seaweed farmers, traders, processors, and officials from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Socrates remarked, “Allow me to express the wish that this congress will be productive in terms of learning and ultimately increase the production of seaweeds to improve the quality of life of our people.”
With the theme “Maganda ang Presyo, Kung ang Kalidad ng Gulaman ay Husto,” the congress focused on enhancing seaweed production standards to ensure better pricing and economic growth in coastal communities.
“Seaweed farming is not just a livelihood; it is a lifeline for many. To uplift these communities sustainably, we must produce seaweeds that not only satisfy market demand but also command a fair and rewarding price,” Laurel said.
As part of the congress, organizers launched the Enhanced Philippine Seaweed Development Program Website and distributed seaweed harvesters, carts, nurseries, and dryers to selected beneficiaries to modernize and boost the industry.
