The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Palawan Chapter conducted a three-day training among basketball mentors or coaches in Palawan held at the Palawan State University – Gymnasium from July 29 to July 31.

This was in partnership with Toyota Puerto Princesa, mounted through Robin Uy, serving as a member of the Board of Trustees for SBP Palawan.

Gilas Pilipinas coach Jong Uichico spoke before the invited participants to the SBP Coaches Accreditation.

Uy explained that the three-day training aims to extend further knowledge to aspiring coaches, to strengthen the grassroots of basketball in Palawan, and most importantly, to guide the players, especially, the youth, accordingly.

“This was initiated by SBP kasi matagal nang program ito natin–being a coach, you have to have the proper exposure and the knowledge and ito yong [SBP Coach Accreditation] sa knowledge side,” said Uy.

“Then sa exposure ay yung mga liga–we just want to extend the programs of SBP to the regions kaya sinuportahan natin yung Palawan mismo, pero as a whole Region 4-B coaches ito. Kaya kung tatanungin niyo kung sino nag initiate nito, well, I’m just a part of it, but this is for the whole SBP family talaga–I’m just a tool here,” Uy added.

“It’s fulfilling, of course, it’s inspiring for them na at least na nararamdaman na nila na they can take basketball very seriously–it’s because, of course, yung sa likod niyan, kung matuto sila ng basketball from coach Jong Uichico, saan nila i a-apply? So that’s why we we’re having annual tournaments here–kasi gusto natin magamit nila [coaches] kung ano ang mga natutunan nila,” reiterated Uy.

“So we would like to thank coach Jong Uichico for taking time here, even coaches from Adamson, EAC [na] talagang nagbigay sila ng oras to be with us in this three day event,” he added.

PBA and Gilas Pilipinas coach Jong Uichico said, it was really fulfilling for him to impart his knowledge to some of the coaches in the province, and even expressed his intent to return to the city, as he said that he feels the determination and willingness of the participants to learn in the said event.

Uichico further said that he has “high hopes” that the grassroots of basketball in the province of Palawan will grow more, most importantly, to teach players, especially, the younger generation, in having the proper discipline when it comes to their games.

“Very fulfilling and nakita ko sa mga coaches [na] they are very receptive they want to absorb, learn and we find contentment if the coaches are very receptive and willing to learn…so parang hindi na nagiging trabaho…it is part of our advocacy or our part of our sharing na maski kaunting maka-share kami…it’s a big fulfillment for me already,” Uichico said upon being asked on what he have seen and felt during the three-day event.

“Hopefully, in the future ay more coaches will be attending and more willing to learn and get more knowledge from not only me but from other coaches that will come to Palawan. I really hope that I can come here as often as I can…I can be invited as often as I can because I like doing what I’m doin,” the PBA and Gilas Pilipinas coach said.

“Support the Chairman’s Cup because it is a tool for all coaches to enhance their knowledge and enhance their experience as basketball coaches…[because] not all provinces and regions have the same opportunity given by sir Robin Uy…and we are thankful for sir Robin Uy for making the Chairmans Cup,” he added.

According to the President of Tabidan Y Ang Mga Arbitero (TAMA), Jack Altarejos, who is also a participant in the basic training that was attended by Uichico, he believes that it is time for Palawan to evolve in the game of basketball. He also expressed his gratitude towards the people who are behind the said event.

After the three-day activity, each participant was awarded with a certificate of accreditation from the SBP.

Uy said he plans to have more of the basic training in the coming months or years.

SBP Palawan will also conduct a Technical Officials’ Accreditation and Licensing on August 5-7, 2022 at the Palawan State University.
